Managing people properly is a skill that you know you have perfected when you realize there IS NO perfecting. As a manager, take comfort in knowing that employees do recognize an “A” for effort and are fairly forgiving when you build a trusting relationship with them.

Employees are individuals so there is no clean and cookie cut method to being a great manager, but after 10’s of thousands of conversations with both happy and dissatisfied employees, there are a few basic principles that employees have expressed separate the good from the bad:

- Recognition & Appreciation
- Praise in public/Condemn behind closed doors
- Set Goals have accountability and clear expectations
- Lead by example
- Clear Communication
- Avoid being too much of a friend
- Confront on issues that will eventually lead to failure
- Avoid “vomiting” downwards
- Away vs. towards (carrot or stick)
